NEW! Abenaki Basket Makers

Basket making was trade passed down through the generations. However, many Abenaki basket makers did not teach their children to make baskets in order to help them pass as non-Indian. Turn of the century it was dangerous to be Indian with residential schools and eugenics, and they wanted to protect their children. Most families lost a generation or two of basket makers. Five Wabanaki tribes of North America depend on the brown ash trees, which are threatened by the Emerald Ash Borer, to make baskets.Today we celebrate the Abenaki artists carrying on the tradition.

Abenaki Fishing Weir

An Abenaki fishing weir that has had continual use since 3,800 BP. This illustration depicts the spring alewife run pre-European contact. The fish swam upstream from the ocean and were trapped in the corners of the "V". Pottery, dugout canoe, and lifestyle of the Abenaki have been drawn as recorded by Archaeologist Robert Goodby.

A Deep Presence: 13,000 Years of Native American History By Robert G. Goodby
A new book by archaeologist Dr. Robert G. Goodby tells the remarkable story of Native Americans in the Monadnock Region, from the remains of the oldest known dwellings in New England to the 4,000-year-old Swanzey Fish Dam still visible in the Ashuelot River.This volume draws on Goodby’s archaeological research on the written history, and the living traditions of today’s Abenaki people.

Pre-Colonial Brattleboro, VT, Abenaki site on the Connecticut River. were hunted by the Abenaki. An archeological dig uncovered 5,000 year old pottery, Timber rattlesnakes and Copperheads bones. Native American tribe living on the Connecticut River.

NEW! Abenaki Wantastiquet Mountain Site, NH

What is now Brattleboro, VT, was a Native American, Abenaki site located on a terrace of land under the base of Wantastiquet Mountain, on the Connecticut River. The mountain was also home to timber rattlesnakes and Copperheads, which were hunted by the Abenaki. An archeological dig uncovered 5,000 year old pottery, stone tools, snake bones and cooking fires. Pictured here is a Native American tribe on the Connecticut River who are cooking, building canoes, building wigwams and quonset huts, canoeing, tanning hides, eating snakes and corn, grinding grain, with Mount Wantastiquet in the distance.

Native American Paleoindian Mother and Child

Paleoindian mother and child with snow covered Mount Monadnock in the distance.
The Presence of Native American in the Monadnock Region stretches back at least 12,600 years ago, based on the findings of archaeologist and author, Dr. Robert Goodby. Compelling artifacts show wigwams housed multiple people, and the caribou roamed the harsh landscape left after the glaciers receded.
